Proofreading

Proofreading of English

Proofreading of English text was originally the last stage of checking in the process of paper-based publishing, taking place after typesetting and before final printing. Nowadays, proofreaders carry out a similar role for electronic publishing.

Traditionally proofreaders would mark up the typeset copy of the text on paper, the proof copies or just 'proofs', using standard proof correction marks, such as the ISO-5776 system. Nowadays it is more common to mark up the electronic file using MS Word’s Track Changes utility, or Adobe Acrobat for pdf files.

The advent of computers may have changed the tools of the trade, but the function of the proofreader, providing the final pre-publication check, still remains.

Proofreading - for Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

Proofreading is our fastest check. Because our service is internet based all our proofreading is done electronically.

We check your proof text for and correct: spelling, punctuation, grammar, inconsistencies, mixed tenses and misused or unsuitable words. Errors in general knowledge facts are corrected where they are evident.

Our proofreading services can be of particular value to those who are not native English speakers. For more information see the Non-English Speaking Businesses section.

Proofreading - How do we Correct?

You have the option of receiving your completed, corrected work as, either an electronically marked-up copy where you implement the final changes, or a fully changed copy where we have made the changes for you.

Proofreading - When should we Correct?

Proofreading is best suited to texts where the English is quite robust. Perhaps they have been previously edited, or they could be small or medium-sized documents written by an author whose mother tongue is English. The proofreading process provides that final polish to correct errors which have crept in during document revision.

In English, the correct spelling of words, and correct grammar can vary according to the context. ESL (English as a Second Language) authors find this an area where errors in language usage are easily made. By proofreading texts our expert proofreading service ensures the English grammar and English spelling of words is correct.
